about

This was our first show before a proper audience in over two years (’these strange times’ etc). We've done a few livestreams in the meanwhilst—some nearly as well physically attended as this show! & we spent a day in the studio, which is different but really not the same. This was in some sense our ‘return to the stage’.

This was also our second show ever at Ballard Avenue's now-historic Sunset Tavern, aside from an appearance at Psychfest in 2018 (also in August strangely enough, though on the 31st rather than the 13th... Numerology much?)—checkitout here: beyondcaptainorca.bandcamp.com/album/2018-08-31-northwest-psychfest

5 drew an oracle card before the show, from Laura Tempest Zakroff's excellent Anatomy Of A Witch Oracle, & got "The New Moon". This was surprising because the moon was in fact quite full. The card suggests the seeds of new beginnings, which was appropriate to the situation—first show back & all.

One of those seeds was Jack's suggestion that we try improvising from prompts—not an uncommon improv practice but something we've done only twice before (though individual members performances have been informed in various ways from time to time).*

With this in mind, 5 put together a 4-song "setlist", inspired in part by another seed—that this show took place on the 47th anniversary of The Grateful Dead's "Make-Believe Ballroom" performance at San Francisco's Great American Music Hall (better known these days as One From The Vault).

To be clear: No music was prepared in advance! 5 read off each title, then we began to play without further discussion. Track 4, "The Hike (2nd Ascent)", is the only slight exception: This is an idea we'd explored once before in the studio, wherein each player visualizes a hike of their choice and interprets it spontaneously on their instrument. Guaranteed to be different each time, just like any other hike!

After we'd played through the four titles on the list, Patrick called for a free improvisation to close out the night. The eventual name for that piece derives partly from indigenous names for Mount Baker—a great place to hike!—& partly from "Caution: Do Not Stop On Tracks!" from The Grateful Dead's 2nd LP, Anthem Of The Sun.
